"the independent artists’ greenhouse is an original model developed by freshpaint, showcasing each year new, full bodies of work by promising, unrepresented artists at the beginning of their professional career.
members of a yearly-appointed committee, comprised of curators, established artists, gallerists, art critics and collectors from Israel and abroad, review the artists’ anonymous portfolios for selection. Freshpaint’s curators hold personal interviews with the artists and visit their studios.
each artwork presented here was chosen by freshpaint’s curatorial staff, while providing consultation and close assistance to each of the selected Greenhouse artists. the anonymous selection process and the yearly appointment of the selection committee members, ensure the utmost diversity and promise equal opportunity for all greenhouse candidates." "goldstein’s recent works have searched for moments of transition between binary contrasts (man/woman, interior/exterior, day/night, conscious/subconscious and more). these moments offer a new perspective of these opposites, perceived in the society in which he grew up as absolute and polarized, though, like twilight moments at sunset and sunrise, they actually imply the existence of a spectrum of colors, beauty and interest between one end and the other. in his paintings, goldstein tries to work between abstraction and realism using his technical knowledge of oil painting: the work is done in thin, diluted layers on top of one another, which result in a color that is not always predictable"

"in sculpture he prefers to let the idea lead him to the material and technique. once he encounters an interesting thought, he seeks out the material and form which will best depict the concept. this process allows him to work with a wide range of materials and techniques in sculpture, and in a variety of different styles in painting, and it requires him to always remain in a state of learning. the relationship between his exhibited works and those in his studio has two components: one is theme, which is expressed through a wide variety of materials, and the other is the aesthetic of the works, which points to an attraction to shimmering visuals, material seduction and a labor-intensive process."

winner of "curator's pick",Daniel S. Palmer, the current Curator of New York’s City Public Art Fund and formerly Assistant Curator at New York’s storied Jewish museum shares his favorites in this year’s Independent Artists Greenhouse:
"shmuel goldstein create very seductive, visually appealing pieces that are concerned with spaces in-between as well as technical processes and traces made by chance. i really loved his footballs, made from used painted canvases. they incorporate transitional movement, to scrutinize the binary contrasts that are so dominant in our culture. the grey area between black and white is a beautiful space to make work and shmuel explorea that thoughtfully. he callenges the expectations of what a work of art is supposed to be and elevates what is typically seen as 'low culture' object."
